How to Vote Biblically: A Framework for Idaho Christians

As Christians, we are called to be salt and light in every area of life — including the voting booth. But how do we evaluate candidates and ballot measures through a biblical lens? Here is a practical framework.

Start with Prayer

Before researching any candidate or issue, take it to the Lord. Ask for wisdom, discernment, and a heart that seeks His will above party loyalty or personal preference.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” — James 1:5

The Biblical Issues Filter

Scripture speaks clearly on several issues that should inform how we vote:

  • The Sanctity of Life — Does this candidate or policy protect life from conception to natural death? (Psalm 139:13-16, Proverbs 24:11-12)
  • Marriage and Family — Does this candidate uphold God’s design for marriage and the family? (Genesis 2:24, Ephesians 5:22-33)
  • Parental Rights — Does this candidate support parents as the primary authority over their children’s upbringing and education? (Deuteronomy 6:6-7, Proverbs 22:6)
  • Religious Liberty — Does this candidate protect the free exercise of religion? (Acts 5:29, Romans 13:1-7)
  • Justice and Righteousness — Does this candidate pursue justice and care for the vulnerable? (Micah 6:8, Isaiah 1:17)

Beyond the Issues: Character Matters

Policy positions matter, but so does character. Scripture is clear that leaders should demonstrate integrity, humility, and a willingness to serve rather than be served.

“When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when a wicked man rules, the people groan.” — Proverbs 29:2

Your Vote Is Your Stewardship

Voting is not just a right — it is a stewardship responsibility. God has placed us in this nation, in this state, at this time. Our participation in the democratic process is one way we fulfill our calling to be salt and light.
